The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets is an organization designed to provide youth ages 12 to 19 years old with the opportunity to gain leadership skills, nautical skills, communication skills and much more. Sea Cadets participate in a wide variety of training, and have the opportunity to learn about nautical topics such as sailing, naval traditions, power boat operation, communications at sea and more. Sea Cadets also participate in precision drill and developing survival and marksmanship skills.

Sea Cadet training happens in three main segments. Regular training occurs during mandatory weekly training nights, weekend training throughout the cadet year compliments regular training to include practical skills development, team training, citizenship, fitness and fun, and there is always optional training where cadets choose specialty activities, and sometimes teams may be selected for competitions.  The choice of optional activities varies each year based on cadet interest, commitment to practice/train and availability of instructors/coaches.

Sea Cadets also have the chance to further their skills and learn new ones at summer training centres, which are either two, three or six weeks long and based on a wide variety of skill sets and interests. Select International Exchanges and Ship deployments are also available each year.

We have experienced, qualified instructors who lead our cadets and allow our young people to meet their potential in a safe, positive environment, letting them make new friends and try new activities while developing confidence and citizenship. All of our instructors have undergone extensive training and criminal record checks.

Effort put into the Sea Cadet program by cadets does not go unnoticed. There are various forms of recognition, including promotions, awards, certificates and medals.

Our regular training program runs from early September to May and closes with an Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) and on-water fun until the end of June.

We have continuous registration throughout the year - new members are always welcome. Drop in and ask to speak to the Administration Officer or contact us at kingstonseacadets@gmail.com, 613 541 5010 x 6117 to make an appointment.

Community Service

Cadets participate in and support a broad range of community initiatives and events. Some of them the Training Staff and the Branch select, some are offered from the cadets themselves and some cadets do on their own. It all counts towards self-development, the cadet program requirements and high school volunteer credits. If you have a favourite make sure your Divisional Officer hears about it. We may be able to add additional participation. In addition to supporting the Royal Canadian Legion’s poppy campaign, ST LAWRENCE cadets have cleaned up designated areas near our training facility, Royal Canadian Legion 560, as well as participating in other community-minded events.

Team Building!

One of the best ways to learn is to have fun while doing it, and at RCSCC St LAWRENCE everyone is welcome to join in.  Cadets do sports together with the aim of enjoying activities and improving fitness, regardless of how skilled you are or how fit you are when you start.  We also do weekend trips and day excursions where you can get to know your friends better and make new ones when combined with other local corps and squadrons.

Supporting Activities & Teams

The optional training program at St Lawrence provides excellent training opportunities for those who want to get the most out of their cadet experience. A list of possible activities, determined each year, includes:
The Henderson Sisters - St Lawrence’s Sailing Team for the 2019 National Regatta.

SAILING AND KAYAKING

RCSCC St Lawrence has access to 420 dinghy sailboats and 27’ Service whalers, and canoes through the local cadet nautical site, canoes and Branch owned kayaks which cadets can sail for free under the supervision of our qualified, experienced staff. These boats give young people another way to learn skills like leadership and cooperation, as well as sailing and navigation.

St Lawrence sailors are some of the best in Canada.  We are very proud of the efforts of our sailing team, and this activity is open to everyone. Every cadets gets the chance to learn the CANSAIL programme and progress based on interest skills, aptitude and discipline to practice. Some cadets get the chance to hone their skills and learn about racing through our summer training courses. We try to expose our cadets to sailing regattas (live and virtual). Last year a St Lawrence team represented Ontario at the 2019 NATIONAL SEA CADET REGATTA held here in Kingston, Ontario; placing within the top ten.

The cadet sailing program  is a FREE activity; one of the best things sea cadets has to offer. Many cadets spend every summer on the water sailing and making friends from all over Canada.

BAND

St Lawrence's band practices almost every week alongside our other local cadet units to maximize exposure to dedicated qualified volunteer instructors.

Sea Cadet music training is based upon the Royal Conservatory of Music standards. Starting later into the training year, the band makes up an important part of our ceremonial events. Our band members also participate in a tri-service band for community ceremonial events such as Remembrance Day and Battle of the Atlantic parades and local corps’ Annual Ceremonial Reviews.

Instruments and music are provided.

Come see how much fun being in the band can be! Summer courses in music are offered at all levels, from absolute beginner to advanced player.

SEAMANSHIP

St Lawrence prides itself in seamanship training. Cadets are taught how to tie bends and hitches, create knot boards, rig gyns and sheerlegs, standing derricks and apply them to realistic situations at the corps and at home or the cottage. Cadets with an interest and the willingness to try new things are exposed to advanced ceremonial rope work that creates things like rope mats, boatswain belts, wrist bracelets and ceremonial paddles.

MARKSMANSHIP, BIATHLON, ORIENTEERING

We have experienced coaches ready to help you try out some exciting activities. Our cadets have competed in regional and provincial competitions in Marksmanship (target shooting), Biathlon (modelled after an Olympic sport consisting of Marksmanship and Cross- Country skiing) and Orienteering (using map and compass over on-ground courses). Safety is always our highest priority, and our cadets have placed very well in competitions in all of these disciplines.

DRILL TEAM

RCSCC ST LAWRENCE aspires each year to have a guard and a Drill team that is large enough to compete at Provincial competition. In addition to regular drill training and rifle drill, training includes a memorized drill sequence requiring concentration and discipline.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD PROGRAM

All cadets have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program, an international youth program which recognizes Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of achievement and personal growth in the categories of Community Service, Skill Building, Physical Fitness, living and working with others, and undertaking a journey. Find out more about the award program by clicking the link here, and seeing what sea cadets need to do to get the award here.
