The Navy League Cadets is an organization designed to provide youth ages 9 to 12 years old with the opportunity to gain leadership skills, nautical skills, communication skills and much more.  The programme is separate from the Canadian Cadet Organizations. It is solely sponsored by the Navy League of Canada, and it is not supported by the Department of National Defence like the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. The Navy League Cadet programme is led by civilian volunteers, who are Navy League Officers supervised by local branches of the Navy League of Canada.

The training programme of the Navy League Cadets introduces youth to the training available in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and is modified to serve the needs of the younger age group.

Navy League Cadets participate in a wide variety of training, and have the opportunity to learn about nautical topics such as sailing, naval traditions, first aid, communications at sea and fitness. Cadets also participate in precision drill, seamanship, band, citizenship, and lots of fun.

Navy League Cadet training occurs during weekly training nights and scheduled weekend training throughout the cadet year. The training schedule is well balanced to compliment regular training and practical skills development with team training, citizenship, fitness and fun, and competition practices.

Navy League Cadets also have the chance to further their skills and learn new ones during the summer both locally and with other corps in Eastern Ontario area.

Our qualified Navy League Officers and Cadet Instructors train our cadets and allow our young people to meet their potential in a safe, positive environment, letting them make new friends and try new activities while developing confidence and citizenship. All of our instructors complete the National Volunteer Screening requirements and undergo provincial level leadership and subject training.

Effort put into the Navy League program by cadets does not go unnoticed. There are various forms of recognition, including promotions, awards, certificates and medals.

Our regular training program runs from early September to May and closes with an Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) and on-water fun until the end of June.

We have continuous registration throughout the year - new members are always welcome. Drop in and ask to speak to the Administration Officer or contact us at co.nlcccataraqui@gmail.com, 613 541 5010 x 6117 to make an appointment.

Community Service

Cadets participate in and support a broad range of community initiatives and events. Some of them the Training Staff and the Branch select, some of them are in support of important fundraising initiatives, some are suggested by returning cadets.  It all aims toward youth development.  In addition to supporting the Royal Canadian Legion’s poppy campaign, NLCC Cataraqui cadets participate in community beautification, spread Holiday Cheer, and send heart-felt mail to our military members serving abroad.  When she is in town, NLCC Cataraqui cadets also help with public tours aboard the HMCS Oriole.

Team Building!

One of the best ways to learn is to have fun while doing it, and at NLCC Cataraqui everyone is welcome to join in.  Cadets do sports together with the aim of enjoying activities and improving fitness, regardless of how skilled you are or how fit you are when you start.  We also do weekend trips and day excursions where you can get to know your friends better and make new ones when combined with other local corps and squadrons.

Activities & Teams

Some of the possible activities, the Leadership Team tries to offer each year include, but are not limited to:

SAILING AND KAYAKING

NLCC Cataraqui registers a limited number of cadets each year for CANSAIL training at Collin's Bay Yacht Club.  This is possible from funding from our Branch and a parental co-pay.

Summer camp offers canoeing and sailing.

NLCC Cataraqui shares access to Branch owned kayaks which cadets can sail for free under the supervision of our qualified, experienced staff. These boats give young people another way to learn skills like leadership and cooperation, as well as sailing and navigation.

Another way we try to get  onwater training is through supported sail training aboard the St Lawrence II, just like our fellow Sea Cadets.

Remembrance Day Service at St. Mary's Cemetary

BAND

NLCC Cataraqui band opportunities vary each year based on qualified qualified volunteer instructors. In the past we have had the chance to learn, practice and parade with the Sea Cadets and the tri-service band at  community events and year-end Annual Ceremonial Reviews.

Instruments and music are provided.

SEAMANSHIP

Seamanship training has variety and is lots of fun. Cadets are taught how to tie bends and hitches, create knot boards, rig gyns and apply them to realistic situations at the corps, on the water with sailboats and/or sailing ships, and at home or the cottage.

Material for training is usually provided. Sometimes you can use things at home for more practice.

DRILL TEAM

NLCC Cataraqui aspires each year to have a  Drill team that qualifies for  Provincials. In addition to regular drill  training, competition includes a memorized drill sequence requiring concentration and discipline.
