Volunteer Opportunities for Adults

There are several different types of volunteering within the Navy League that provide adults with opportunities to apply skills, gain experience and learn personnel management; contribute to a sense of community and the successful operational support to NLCC Cataraqui and RCSCC St Lawrence.
  • Volunteering Screening

Adults interested in becoming Civilian Volunteers and Instructors, Navy League Cadet Officers and/or members of the local Branch (Corps’ support committee) must be screened.

Screening is mandatory for all adults who come in contact with cadets as an instructor, supervisor, canteen supporter, a Branch member and sometimes even a driver. This activity is to protect both the youth we support and you the volunteer. It is important that we demonstrate and display(badges) our due diligence to ensure that only authorized volunteers are directly responsible for the safety and well-being of our cadets.

To become a screened volunteer, the Branch requires:

    1. A completed the application form

Here is the link to the Navy League of Canada for the Screening paperwork. We are always in need

of volunteers to help us with the overall operations and support of cadet activities.  If you are interested in volunteering please complete that attached paperwork / screening process. (https://navyleague.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/NL101E-15Feb-2017.pdf)

    2. A current Police Check including vulnerable sector screening.

    3. Confirmation that you have read the League’s Workplace Safety, Harassment, Drug, and Alcohol

    Policies.

    4. Copies of two pieces of government issued identification that shows a combination of address, photo and signature.

    5. Two current photos similar in nature to a passport photo.

    6. An introduction to the Corps Commanding Officers.

    7. Participation in an interview with the Branch Volunteer Screening Coordinators.

    8. Provide us a receipt for CPIC/VSS for reimbursement.

The Branch completes the application form and briefs the Commanding Officers and Branch President. If all parties still interested in being a volunteer, the screening package is submitted to Ontario Division.

Your issued badge must be worn/visible at all times when engaged in a Branch or cadet activity. The badge is on loan and must returned to the Branch should you cease being a volunteer.

Volunteer Screening is valid for 5 years.

  • NLCC Volunteers

The Navy League Cadet Corps are managed and supervised by adult volunteers who are enrolled as Navy League Cadet Officers or Cadet Instructors (CIs). Officers are granted warrants by the League, wear naval pattern uniforms and use naval ranks followed by a Navy League (NL) designator. Navy League Cadet Officers are not members of the Canadian Forces.

All Navy League Cadet Corps volunteers are provided opportunities for development of skills that will undoubtedly benefit you in your career as well. These include home study and weekend training in leadership and instructional techniques.

We value the service of our volunteers. In addition to the joy and fulfillment you gain from volunteering, the Navy League of Canada has a comprehensive awards and recognition program. Awards are presented at the local, regional and national levels.

  • RCSCC Sea Cadets Volunteer

There are two different types of positions for adults to hold at a Sea Cadet Corps. A Navy League volunteer is there to aid the Corps.

The Sea Cadet program is managed and supervised by CIC (Cadet Instructor Cadre) Officers, which are paid members of the Canadian Forces. For details, please have a look at the Cadets Canada webpage. Not everyone who wants to teach cadets has to enroll in the Canadian Forces.

Civilian Instructors (CI) may be hired to complement the knowledge and skill set of the CIC staff. Many are highly specialized in particular areas of cadet training such as first aid, music or biathlon. CIs who do not have regular positions may serve as unpaid volunteers. In this case, these individuals are deemed to be volunteers of the Navy League and, as such, are subject to the Navy League’s governing documents and policies.

  • Branch Volunteers

Each Navy League Cadet Corps and Sea Cadet Corps has an associated Navy League Branch working behind the scenes.

The Branch arranges a variety of things to support the corps, including fundraising, insurance, and cadet supervision and also cadet instruction, should the need be identified.

There are numerous tasks and responsibilities to be fulfilled by the Branch so that a Sea Cadet and/or Navy League Cadet Corps can exist. Many hands make light work. To manage the overall responsibility of the local branch, there is an organization structure and primary roles to be filled, including president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and Corps Chairpersons.
